The Romanian automaker was tied to Renault from the beginning: it would build some of its cars under license. The Dacia 1300 became successful thanks to its reliability and low cost, so the company gradually expanded it into a full line of regional variations. Once that model became too old, Renault stepped in to fully acquire Dacia and reinvent it with newer products. It is now the group’s low-cost brand in Europe.
